Brill Saloon #104

19 march 2010 - Porto, Museu do Carro Electrico/Tramway Museum: Now this tram is seriously old - built by the Starbuck company of Birkenhead, England in the 1860s (yes, 1860s!). It was designed to be drawn by horses or, in the case of Porto, by mules and was motorised in the early 1900s when the network was converted to electricity. It was rebuilt for the museum in 1997 and now occupies pride of place.

19 march 2010 - Porto, Museu do Carro Electrico/Tramway Museum: Another `bogie Americano` from the operational fleet of the museum. Work is in hand to make these trams safe to run up the hill into the old city around Carmo,which will involve fitting track brakes and easing one or two sharp curves in the track.

19 march 2010 - Porto, Museu do Carro Electrico/Tramway Museum: Several of these 4-axle trams, known locally as `bogie Americano` have survived, as they were not built until the 1930s and remained in passenger service well into the 1990s, only being withdrawn as most of the once-extensive network colsed down. Note the `Providence` lifeguard which was often a feature of American-built trams. #274 is now a member of the museum fleet.

19 march 2010 - Porto, Carmo: One of the small operating fleet of STCP runs round the Carmo loop on a tourist trip. The remaining tram routes in Porto are concentrated in the old historic city centre and are mostly run for visiting tourists. In former times, this was a large network with up to 400 trams, so is now just a shadow, with only around ten trams fit for service. This car is an original American tram built by Brill in Philadelphia around 1912.

19 march 2010 - Porto, Gas, Rua do Ouro: One of the last remaining Porto 4-axle trams on a rare excursion from the museum. These cars can`t run safely up the hill to the old city centre, so are confined to the riverside track past the tram depot, which means that they don`t get very much use. This particular car was known as a `semi-convertible` as the side panels roll up into the roof to make it an open car in summer.

Brill Crossbench #100

19 march 2018 - Porto, Museu da STCP/Tramway Museum: This excellent museum holds various historic vehicles, not just trams, and is a focal point for the remaining tram routes which operate through the old city centre. Porto trams were nearly all replaced by buses and trolleybuses and were lucky to survive. This lovely crossbench car of 1910 was severely damaged in a fire and fully rebuilt in 1995 - it is an original Brill (USA) tram, like many that were shipped to Porto to run on a network which once numbered over 400 vehicles. These historic trams are in great demand by museums everywhere.

21 march 2010 - Portugal, Ribeira de Sintra: In recent years, the Sintra-Atlantico tramway has identified the need for more trams, as their 1903 Brill cars are rather small, low-powered and a bit scary to drive down the steeply-graded track, as they have only hand brakes. The solution has been to obtain some redundant Lisboa trams from Carris and re-gauge them to match the Sintra track - this is #100 of 1935, formerly Carris #709.

21 march 2010 - Portugal, Ribeira de Sintra: Still poking around the Sintra Electrico depot, here is a photo of an enclosed Brill trailer that hasn`t featured before on TWB. Like all the other original trams on this system, it came from Philadelphia, USA in 1903. Trailers aren`t often used now on the Sintra-Atlantico line, because the condition of the track and the steep gradient make it rather a nightmare for modern Health and Safety officers.

21 march 2010 - Portugal, Ribeira de Sintra: The Sintra tramway depot houses remarkable survivors. This line barely survived but, at the insistence of the local authority, was refurbished after several years of closure and now runs again from Sintra town down a steep and very tortuous track alongside the main road to the coast. Fortunately, the fleet of 1903-built, handbrake-only Brill trams has been kept intact and can still be ridden as they have been for over 100 years. Car #7, shown here, is a summer `toastrack` with open sides.

19 march 2010 - Porto, Aeroporto Francisco SA Carneiro: No expense was spared when the Porto Metro was built. Here at the city`s airport a very impressive overall roof covers the tracks and also Metro car 002, which hasn`t featured on TWB before. If there is any doubt where this picture was taken, just read the wall.

Bombardier Eurotram #MP 055

18 march 2010 - Porto, Ponte Luis: A Bombardier Eurotram crosses the amazing high bridge across the River Douro in central Porto. The modern Porto tram network was carved out from the remains of several narrow-gauge railway routes which once ran from the city centre to outlying suburbs, which were completely re-equipped with these futuristic-looking trams. Porto now has two completely separate tramways - old and new - although the Metro is more like a light railway.

20 march 2010 - Lisboa, Santo Amaro: There appear to be only two or three works trams remaining from the batch of ten once supplied to Lisboa. Although I`m not an expert, they seem to have Brill 21E underframes and Dick, Kerr DB1 controllers, which suggests to me that they arrived here very early in the 1900s? Anyway, they are mostly replaced by motor trucks these days. This particular one is a box van and is still seen occasionally on the network at night.

Remodelado #564

20 march 2010 - Lisboa, Santo Amaro: Three contrasting trams inside the Carris depot. #564 is a `Remodelado` of 1931, rebuilt to handle modern traffic conditions in daily service. Car #Z-13 in the centre is a works car with open sides, called a `zorra` in Lisboa - there were once ten of these, supplied in the early 1900s for various technical duties, now mainly replaced by a fleet of motor trucks. This particular one was once car #395. The red car is Tourist Tram #3 - these provide a daily service round parts of the network at a premium fare, costing a lot more than the service trams that run the same routes. American tourists seem to like them, though. This particular car was once #726 and was built in 1938.

Brill Carris #283

20 march 2010 - Lisboa, Cais do Sodre: The impressive `toastrack` tram, now the last one remaining in Lisboa, on a rare trip outside its normal home in the Carris museum. These summer trams were built by Brill of Philadelphia, USA and shipped to Portugal in 1901. This tram had a very lucky escape - withdrawn from service in the early 1950s, it spent almost the next twenty years as a plaything in a city park until rescued for preservation in 1981. It is only used on sunny days (probably not because of the risk of rain damage, but because the drivers don`t like getting wet....)

Remodelado #572

14 march 2010 - Lisboa, Calcada de Sao Francisco: This is Lisboa tram #572 - honest! One of several places on the amazing Carris network where you wonder just how the tram stays on the track, particularly on this corner, where you can watch one wheel actually leave the rails as it turns. These rebuilt, traditional four-wheeled trams actually have very powerful motors and can sail up gradients such as this with ease.

Brill Carris #330

14 march 2010 - Lisboa, Santo Amaro: Brill convertible tram #330 of 1906 stands at the Carris depot before leaving on a tour of the Lisboa network. These bogie trams were once widespread in the city, having been bought direct from America in kit form and put together in these workshops. The side panels are designed to roll upwards into the roof, leaving the tram open in the summertime. Nowadays, this tram is a little fragile and can only use the flatter, straighter part of the network.

22 march 2010 - Lisboa, Praca do Imperio, Belem: Standing off the track under the trees at the Belem Monastery loop in Lisboa is this, the very last `soapbox` four-wheeled trailer tram of the Carris system, now used as a rest home for tramway employees, who evidently use it for meal breaks and a nice sit down. Although there is a similar tram in the Carris museum, this one is the last to escape from captivity.

Pętla znajduje się pomiędzy górnymi stacjami dwóch kolejek linowych, jednej łączącej Monte z centrum Funchal, i drugiej łączącej Monte z Ogrodem Botanicznym (widzimy budkę z biletami na tą drugą kolejkę). W pobliżu znajduje się kościół Matki Bożej w Monte pochodzący z 1742r. i gdzie w 1922r. został pochowany cesarz Austrii Karol I Habsburg.

Autobusy miejskie pomalowane są na żółto, a turystyczne wozy oddziału PKS na biało-żółto-szaro. Widoczny dworzec PKS składający się ośmiu stanowisk znajduje się przy dolnej stacji kolejki linowej łączącej Funchal z przedmieściem Monte (po prostu góra). Ta kolej linowa otwarta została w listopadzie 2000r., i została poprowadzona trasą jedynej kolei szynowej na wyspie, konkretnie kolei zębatej funkcjonującej w latach 1893-1943.

Zacznijmy od porównania do Budapesztu. Jakkolwiek w tym pierwszym autobusy są może i starsze i niekoniecznie niskopodłogowe to tutaj tabor autobusowy wygląda nieźle natomiast panowie z Lizbony mogliby się wybrać do Budapesztu celem zapoznania się jak to zorganizować by dało się z tego skorzystać.
Po pierwsze: W Lizbonie informacja pasażerska to dramat, schematy jeśli są to są zupełnie nieczytelne, rozkładów jako takich często na przystankach nie ma a o objazdach i zmianach tras nie informuje się w żaden sposób. Dzięki temu naczekałem się na autobus 712 ponad pół godziny i pewnie czekałbym do teraz gdyby jakis dziadek nie powiedział mi coś w stylu "nearar" - co domysliłem się znaczy - nie jeździ.
Po drugie: Autobusy jeźdżą rzadko a ich trasy są zupełnie nieczytelne - to nie Budapesztańska 7mka czy 4ka, których trasy zapamiętuje się od razu i widzi się zderzak następnego gdy jeszcze nie uleciał smród poprzedniego. Tutaj się stoi na przystanku po kilkadziesiąt minut i wuj wie ile się będzie czekać bo podane są interwały - najczęściej równe liczby typu 16, 17 czy 13. Dramat. Sytuację czasem ratują wyświetlacze elektroniczne - pod warunkiem że są i działają.
Po trzecie: Mam nieszczęście dojeżdżać do Amadory do roboty i to w ogóle jest dramat, jakkolwiek w kierunku do pracy mam obcykany autobus 107 i do tego mam jego rozkład bo wsiadam na pętli - co pówrót to jest loteria i kończy się najczęściej wyczekiwaniem go po pół godziny jak tirówka na autostradzie - bo taka super jest tu infrastruktura przystankowa.
Na koniec kilka słów o tym tramwaju. Pewnie były jakieś fundusze europejskie do wykorzystania i wymyślono jak by tu szarpnąć kasę by się nie narobić i zmodernizowano tą piętnastkę - w stosunku do reszty tramwajów to jest to przeskok o kilka generacji do przodu. Ale co z tego, że generacja poszła do przodu jak nawyki pozostały - o czym świadczą pomalowane olejną poręcze w środku tego pojazdu. Takiej tandety to nawet u nas nie ma.

It runs on a British Maley and Taunton truck and has Metrovick motors, although the body was built locally in the Carris workshops. It has only a trolley pole.

22 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Calcada Nova de Sao Francisco. A ‘remodolado’ car on Line 28 claws its way up the final few yards of the fearsome hill out of central Lisbon. This tram dates from 1935 but was one of a number that were extensively rebuilt (‘remodolado’) in he late 1980s. They now have Skoda motors and powerful air brakes and can run anywhere on the Lisboa system, being equipped with both trolley pole (for the narrow streets in the Alfama district) and pantograph.

The cane rattan seats are typical of American-built trams of this period, but this tram has a more unusual feature – the walls slide up into the roof to create an open-sided car for use in summer time, so the interior is distinctly tunnel-shaped. These ‘convertible’ cars were once something of a Portuguese speciality and a few still remain in Lisboa and Porto.
