Berliet ER100R #5210

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia Podul Inalt. RATP has a very mixed selection of second-hand trolleybuses. Five of these neat little Berliets came from a system near St Etienne (FR) in 1999, and only operate on one route. This bus was originally St Etienne #422. The five Berliets only work Line 201.

FBW 91GT #5215

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia Podul Inalt. Another ex-Geneve FBW is car 5215, here being used as a driving school bus. Despite being thirty years old when they arrived here, these are high quality buses, and probably good for many more years of service.

FBW 91GT #5218

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – Soseaua Vestului. Trolleybus Line 44 was added to the RATP network quite recently and is a short extension of the wires to a new terminus at Malu Rosu. For a few hundred metres, the trolleybuses and trams run together in this wide avenue – the only place in Ploiesti where they do this. Ex-Geneve FBW car 5218 is just about to swing into the roadside turning circle. These articulated trolleys are only found on this route.

DAC 6 Turbo #PH 18RTP

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) depou/zajezdnia Str. Gageni. Just one of many RATP technical vehicles based at the tram depot, including a road roller, a mobile crane and a fork-lift truck – no kidding. Like the trolleybus network, the tramway has a huge number of trucks and other odds and ends.

IFA W50 #56267

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Podul Inalt. Another ‘Interventi’ or general-purpose breakdown wagon, with tower wagon #F2864 alongside. Note the auxiliary wheels for running on tram tracks (these must be really useful – there is nowhere where trolleybus wires run alongside the trams!).

Roman R 10215 F #PH 36RTP

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Podul Inalt. A tower wagon with crew accommodation. Ploiesti has several of these – two more can be seen in the background.

DAC 665T #PH 26RTP

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Podul Inalt. A DAC 665T that looks as though it must have a military background. Note that many RATP technical vehicles have ‘RTP’ registrations.

DAC 8 Turbo #PH 24RTP

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Podul Inalt. The tiny Ploiesti trolleybus network has a ridiculous number of works vehicles – they must be expecting a lot of breakdowns. For two very short trolleybus routes, I counted eight different tower wagons or repair trucks at the depot – that’s one for every three trolleybuses, or one for every km of wires! This DAC breakdown tender looks almost brand new.

Graz n1 #5000

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. The ex-Wien Type N1 trailer car – I wonder what the writing says on the side? I’m not sure if it’s part of the design, or just graffiti. I know there is at least one Romanian TWB contributor – perhaps he can translate?

Lohner Wien M #5000

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. Nothing in Ploiesti is quite what it seems – both these trams are numbered 5000 in the fleet. The motor car is a Wien Type M tram of 1926, built by Lohner, and was there numbered 4085. The matching trailer was actually built by Graz Waggenfabrik in 1926 and was Wien #5779. The ‘official’ Ploiesti fleet number for both trams is 45000. They were obviously used for a while as party trams – but it looks like the party is over.

Timiş 2 TM69E #014

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. A TIMIS 2 motor car. Although the number painted on the tram is 014, it is really #45014 – don’t ask me why! Like the other TIMIS cars in the depot yard, this one won’t run again.

Timiş 2 TM69E #414

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. The last few TIMIS trams supplied to Ploiesti for the opening of their tramway in the 1980s are still on the property, but no longer in use. This is a TIMIS 2 trailer – a bogie version of the very basic Romanian design.

Gotha T2-64 #5084

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. Another ex-Potsdam works car that they were presumably very pleased to get rid of to Ploiesti when the KT4D trams arrived here. Again, not used and just abandoned in the yard.

Gotha T57 E #5083

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. This Gotha car still wears its Potsdam number. It came to Ploiesti in 1998, presumably with the big batch of KT4D cars they obtained from the same operator. Perhaps Potsdam just added it for a good customer? Anyway, it’s now totally derelict. This is a track smoothing tram – a concept completely foreign to Romanian tramway operators, so no wonder it isn’t used!

Graz G #5080

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. Another identical GP car – this one was WSB #6416 and has a similar history to 5081, pictured earlier. Why these two trams finished up in Ploiesti, I have no idea! They both look derelict now and are unlikely to run again. Several of these double-ended trams have ended up in Romania from Wiener Linien, who had a massive clear-out when they built a fleet of new works cars a few years ago. Another three-axle conversion.

Graz G1 #5081

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. The unmistakable outline of a Wien works car. This one has an interesting history – it was built by Graz in 1901 as a passenger car and converted by Graf und Stift in 1958, becoming WSB Wien #6413. After a spell at the Mariazell museum in Austria, it came here in 1998. In recent years it has been fitted with a PCC bogie at one end, making it into a three axle car.

Bucuresti type snowbroom tram #5060

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. A rear view of the Ploiesti snowbroom. The electrical resistances are fitted behind the cab. I expect there were once doors here, to keep the snow out, but now there is just a wire cage, which only keeps out small boys’ fingers and isn’t much defence against snow. Still, it keeps the resistances nice and cool! The platform area can also be used to carry work materials.

Bucuresti type snowbroom tram #5060

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti (RO) – depou/zajezdnia, Strada Gageni. I’ll show some more Romania works trams today. This three-axle, Bucuresti type snowbroom was supplied new when the Ploiesti tramway opened in 1987. It doesn’t look as if it is used very often, though – perhaps there isn’t much snow here.

Ikarus 280.02 #2075

31 may 2002 - Ploeszti (Rumunia). Jak widać pasażerom bardzo podoba się jazda niebieskim ikarusem, gdyż zapełniają go szczelnie. Swoją drogą autobus bez otwieranych okien w bałkańskim klimacie to jest zbrodnia przeciwko ludzkości.

31 may 2002 - Ploeszti (Rumunia). Poczdamskie malowanie i umiejscowienie numerów taborowych bardzo przypadło miejscowym do gustu.

Tatra KT4D #072

8 november 2008 - Ploiesti, Str. G. Doja.

Rocar 312E #5202

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – Podul Inalt. Two Rocars wait at the turning loop of Line 201, whist an ex-Geneve artic on Line 44 creeps up behind. As Ploiesti only bought five of these Rocars, I wonder what they used before the French and Swiss buses arrived?

FBW 91GT #5214

Rocar 312E #5201

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Podul Inalt. Numerically the first of the Ploiesti trolleybuses, this would be a very desirable registration plate if you could buy it for your own car. The springs don’t seem to be in very good condition – it isn’t the picture that is crooked, it’s the bus!

Roman Diesel 111 #PH 04 SUU

BMC Probus 215 SCB #3120

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Podul Inalt. A conventional diesel bus stands in the trolleybus depot.

Neoplan N6121 #823

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Podul Inalt. A new low-floor Neoplan trolleybus that RATP seemed keen to show off, but which, now they have it, they don’t seem to know what to do with. A very impressive monster, nevertheless. It came here from Lausanne in Switzerland and is probably just on loan as a demonstrator – maybe Neoplan hope to sell some to RATP?

Berliet ER100R #5209

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Podul Inalt. This Renault-Berliet came originally from the French trolleybus system of Saint-Priest-en-Jarez (no, I never heard of it either – it’s actually part of Saint-Etienne).

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – Hale Coreco. Another ex-Geneve artic in the city centre.

FBW 91GT #5223

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – Malu Rosu. Although RATP Ploiesti have standardised on Tatra KT4-D cars for its small tramway system, their trolleybuses are a mixed bag and are mainly second-hand. This is an ex-Geneve FBW car at the turning circle of Line 44.

Tatra KT4D #070

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – Strada Gageni. Two more of the ex-Potsdam KT4s have reached the far terminus at the city limits and wait to turn across a busy dual carriageway into the turning loop. The message ‘Potsdam greets Ploiesti’ appears on most of the trams – perhaps they were a gift?

Z Class tram #4234

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – depot/zajezdnia Gageni. Lurking in the Ploiesti workshops are two American Third Avenue Railway trams that were brought to Wien under the Marshall Plan after WWII and which now belong to the Friends of the Erdberg museum. A very thorough restoration is under way and it is hoped that the first will run again in 2009.

Tatra KT4DM #101

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – Strada Gageni. A KT4-D runs past the depot entrance on Line 102. Like most Ploiesti cars, it still wears its Potsdam colours and identity, although it actually originated in East Berlin before going to Potsdam.

Tatra KT4D #093

27 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – Gara Vest. Ploiesti operates a small, two route tramway opened in 1987. Like other Romanian tramways of this period, it runs almost entirely in the street. The tram fleet consists of around thirty of these Tatra KT4-Ds from Potsdam in Germany, although a few older treasures remain out of use at the depot. Unlike other Romania cities, most second-hand cars have been renumbered.

Ikarus 280.08 #2144

september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – Halu Rosu. Ikarus day! A 280 belonging to RATP, the city operator, picks up at the trolleybus terminal for a trip on Line 44. The trams follow a different route to Gara de Sud, but you must change half way, so this bus is quicker.

Ikarus 260.43 #PH 63MTV

17 september 2008 - Ploiesti, Romania – Halu Rosu. Ikarus day! The address of this operator is in the block of flats directly opposite – maybe the driver goes home between jobs and just leaves it parked here in the trolleybus terminal.
