11 august 2011 - Khardung-La pass, Leh, Jammu and Kashmir, India. This picture was taken at around 5560m above sea level, on what is allegedly the world's highest pass reachable by car. Which is exactly what this mercedes-clone has done. I preferred to go up there in a pick-up and go back down the 38km to Leh on a mountainbike. That was FUN! :)

9 august 2011 - Bombay, Bandra bus depot. To cope with the wild crowds using the local trains in Bombay every day (you can see how wild some of them are HERE) a system of overbridges was built above the local streets, one leading alongside the Bandra bus depot. The picture shows one of the newest additions to the BEST bus fleet - a CNG-powered bus with an electronic display rather than a film. In the background you can see a typical Indian slum.

9 august 2011 - Bombay, Wellington Chowk. A traditional Bombay bus next to a traditional Bombay taxi, a licence version of the Fiat 1100 from 1951. It may be difficult to believe, but India has adopted their own emissions standards, based on European norms. This bus from Colaba depot is proud to inform that it conforms to the Bharat II standard (same as Euro II). It is running on circular route 111, which takes train passengers from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus around the city centre.

9 august 2011 - Bombay, Madame Cama Road. And this is what the newest generation of double-deckers in Bombay looks like. DDs (British-made) were introduced in 1937. The one in the picture is around 10-12 years old - I remember the batch of full-length cab ones was more-or-less new 10 years ago. Each BEST bus has two destination blinds - one at the front in Marathi, one on the side in English. It\''s the same with depot signs and fleet numbers (English at the back). This is why BEST buses were my favourite tool to learn to read and write Hindi (same script). The DD buses are accessed via the rear like old-fashioned front-engined buses in the UK. Passengers are served by two conductors - one on the lower and one on the upper deck - they usually walk around the deck and hit the handrails with their ticket clippers to alert the passengers. Of course each bus is fitted with a conductor\''s rope - pulled once to signal a stop and two to allow the driver to leave. Over the last 10 years the number of DD buses has dropped, but there is stil a few dozen of them in Colaba, Backbay, Worli, and Kurla depots. The picture shows bus 4027 from Backbay depot on route 138 running between said depot and the magnificent Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station or - as we called it - the Station Formerly Known as VT (Victoria Terminus).

9 august 2011 - Bombay, Marine Drive. The bus public transport in Bombay is similar in many aspects to that of London, and not just because of the colour of the vehicles. There is a huge number of bus lines, the daily vehicle requirement is slightly larger than London\''s, and the buses come in a number of sizes - from a minibus (like this one) to double-deckers of around 11 metres in length. Both cities also hate bendies as much - Bombay experimented with them around 2000 in the suburbs but quickly gave up. The photo shows a gas-powered minibus from Backbay depot running on route 9 Limited in the very centre of the city.

9 august 2011 - Krishna Chandra Road, Bandra, Mumbai. Time for some more of India. This is a typical BEST bus. BEST (Brinahmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport) is a city-owned monopolist responsible for electricity and buses. This structure is - of course - anachronistic. BEST was initially a tram company, which sold surplus electricity to private users. In time they built the city electricity grid and ditched the trams (in 1964), briefly experimenting with trolleybuses. Wikipedia even has a picture of a right-hand-drive Skoda 9Tr HERE.

Volvo 9400 #MH-43-H-31000

8 august 2011 - Bombay-Pune expressway, Sajgaon services. This is what the offer of the state transport undertaking of Maharashtra looks like. On the left a slightly dirty Volvo, on the right the equivalent of an Autosan H9. The Volvos have become a synonim of luxury on the route, linking Pune station with the Bombay suburb of Dadar every 15-30 minutes. The journey time of the bus and train is similar, but the bus has one big advantage - tickets are available for immediate travel, whereas the train is sold out weeks before departure.

1 august 2011 - Calcutta, Esplanade. A car on route 12/1 from Rajabazaar depot turns round under the watchful eye of the dispatcher (sorry about the person in the shot). Given the average speed of trams in this city, this one will reach Belgatchia in around one and a half hours. If I got into the metro at the nearby station I would be there in 20 minutes - if it wasn`t for the huge queues at the ticket window, which often spill out onto the street - which means it would have taken me another good half hour to buy the ticket...

Tata LPO 1210 #WB-25-A-0110

1 august 2011 - Calcutta, B.B.D. Bag. And something else I managed to find. The shortest-wheelbase version of the Tata 1210 is a very popular bus in Calcutta - mainly because it\''s cheap and it fills up with passengers fast - both being important from a private operator\''s point of view.

1 august 2011 - Calcutta, B.B.D. Bag. I found something else from Cal after all. A really worn out bus made by Ashok Leyland runs through one of the main squares of the city, towards the Rabindra Setu bridge. Just behind it is a low-floor Volvo B9 (sadly something obstructed the shot as it came past me), made in India, and bought by the state transport company of West Bengal. To the left we see a Hindustan Ambassador, which is basically a licensed Oxford Minor, made in India non-stop since the 40s. A country of contrasts indeed...

3 august 2011 - Calcutta, Bidhan Sarani. Tram vehicles in Calcutta - unlike any other in the world - have 1st and 2nd class compartments. The 1st class (front half of the vehicle) has seats facing the direction of travel and ceiling-mounted fans (which never work anyway). The 2nd class compartment has seats facing the centre of the vehicle and no fans. Of course the ticket prices for 1st class are a bit higher. And I`m afraid that`s it from Calcutta this time around - I have written an article for the December issue of "Świat Kolei".

3 august 2011 - Calcutta, Shyambazaar. Most termini in Calcutta either have a tram depot or a few sidings. The newly modernised car (from Belgatchia depot) stands next to a slightly older vehicle, nicknamed the "Elephant Car". The mesh at the front is used for protection against the sometimes violent demonstrations. And besides - if I had to stand in front of a window for 8 hours at a stretch I wouldn`t survive long...

3 august 2011 - Calcutta, Hazra Road x Sarat Bose Road. Let me explain. Autorickshaws are one of the basic modes of transport in all Indian cities. However, in most cities they function like taxis. but not in Calcutta. Here they ply on set routes and are like minibuses in Eastern Europe - they fill in the gaps left by the bus and tram networks. As you can see, this vehicle runs on Route 34 from Jatin Das Park metro station along Hazra and Bondel Roads. Each rickshaw takes a maximum of 5 people (3 at the back, 2 next to the driver). As always with this kind of transport - no tickets are issued, and you pay the driver directly.

2 august 2011 - Calcutta, Dufferin Road. And this is what the newest modernised vehicle looks like - built partially from plexiglass and with slightly more modern seats. Under the floor though it`s a vehicle built at best around 1983, using pre-war technology. Not to mention the plexi windows make you feel like you`re in a greenhouse inside. Nothing like a well-done modernisation, eh?

3 august 2011 - Calcutta, Esplanade bus station. After the privatisation of the bus routes (during the reign of the Communist Party of India!) Calcutta became full of these colourful contraptions. The body is part-steel and part-wood, whereas the chassis is a universal Tata chassis, which can be fitted out with either a lorry or a bus body.

2 august 2011 - Calcutta, Park Circus depot. Sadly, since my last visit there 10 years ago, large sections of the network have been closed. In 2001 there were at least two routes serving Park Circus - now the depot houses buses and these old bangers, which won`t ride anywhere anymore. Sadly - despite the tracks not being all that bad, these trams run at around 10-15 km/h, thereby becoming true road-hogs. Also, the city tries to cope with the traffic by making one-way street systems - closing the tram tracks going the "wrong way" each time.

Burn & Co. SLC #724

1 august 2011 - Calcutta, Esplanade. With this picture I`d like to start a short series of pictures of public transport from Calcutta. This picture shows a standard vehicle from this dying network. It`s tough to determine its age - the last batch of new cars was bought in the middle of the 80s, and since then these cars have just undergone repairs and overhauls, using whatever parts were available in the depot :)

25 march 2010 - Manchester, Oxford Road. And this is what marshrutkas look in one of the richest countries of the world. Once Oxford Road was the scene of an epic rivalry between about twenty big and small companies, each trying to get as many students as they could from their homes to the universities. With time more and more dropped out, some were shut by the traffic commissioners, until in 2009 Stagecoach took over the family-run Bullocks Buses. Ah well, who would ride with a company which marketed itself on its website with the words 'Our big red Bullocks...' And so, on the red battlefield marked with the words 'BUS LANE' there were only two left - Finglands and Stagecoach. I wonder how much time will pass until only Stagecoach remains. Sadly, the way economics works, this is the only possible outcome of deregulation.

24 march 2010 - Greater Manchester, Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, Stretford tram stop. I like the Altrincham route mainly for how much mainline railway is still left over out there. The Metrolink was created as a link between the two mainline stations (Piccadilly and Victoria), with two routes out into the suburbs (to Bury and Altrincham), which were taken away from the railways. With those two routes, they just slapped on some OHLE (the Bury line was already electrified with 1500V DC third rail) and got some high-floor trams to run on the route. Only now is investment starting to pour into the tracks and stations and - if you look at the edges of this picture - they sure need it.

24 march 2010 - Salford, St. Peter's Quay. An absolutely new vehicle. Just like Croydon Tramlink, Metrolink also bought clones of Cologne trams from Bombardier - but in a much nicer colour and with a much nicer interior - my opinion anyway. 24 march 2010 - Greater Manchester, Eccles terminus. And here we have a typical ugly bastard from Manchester - fortunately with a retracted Scharfenberg, which makes it look even prettier. The on-street section between Cornbrook and Eccles was only built in 1999, seven years after the opening of the first two routes. Sadly, these vehicles were built mainly for the two original routes, which were re-built from heavy rail routes, with stops more than a kilometre apart, and full throttle in-between. The Eccles route is twisty and full of gradients - the T68 would be easily beaten by an N-car with two trailers packed with passengers.

22 march 2010 - Nottingham, Victoria Street / Fletcher Gate. Unlike in Birmingham, the Nottingham tram network exceeded its ridership forecasts quite quickly. That is why the decision was made to build two new lines to the outskirts, together with large P+R facilities. This is yet another investment with a big question mark above its head due to the sorry state of the UK's public finances.

22 march 2010 - Nottingham, Carlton Road. Just like other bigger companies, NCT also cascades its buses. When new, these Lolynes ran on the backbone of the city network, called "GO2" by NCT. They were then white , with the front colour-coded according to the route they ran. The secondary network was operated by their high-floor predecessors, painted green. Now, after new Scanias arrived, the high-floor buses were retired, these Lolynes were relegated to the secondary network and painted green, whereas the new scanias, partly with leather seats, now run on the main network.

Scania N230UD / East Lancs Olympus #PN09 EMJ

22 march 2010 - Birmingham, Moor Street Ringway. This little company competes directly with the rail service between the picturesque Stratford-upon-Avon and Birmingham - directly to the left of this view is Moor Street station, where trains from Stratford arrive. Nevertheless, when buying new buses, the company could have specified a few extras, such as leather seats, which would definitely have helped it secure additional clientele.

Volvo B7TL / Alexander ALX400 #4284

22 march 2010 - Birmingham, Corporation Street. And this is what developed bus competition looks like in a developed country. On the right we have the incumbent provider on the local market, on the left - a competitor with a little shed in the field and a few little buses which run a suburban service between Birmingham and Oldbury. There is one difference between the UK and the former USSR - the little guys survive mainly on pensioners. Every Briton over 60. gets free bus travel (refunded by the councils), so many of them will use the bus rather than their car even if they own one. And since they can use ANY bus for free, they will get on whatever comes along first. That's why the big providers try to broaden their market by attracting other social groups, whereas the smaller ones prefer to concentrate on pensioners and students.

Ansaldo T69 #04

22 march 2010 - Birmingham, picture taken from Soho Benson Road stop. One of the last decisions of the Department for Transport before the election was the agreement to fund the extension of the Midland Metro from the current terminus at Snow Hill through the city centre to the main rail station at New Street. The project would also entail a complete change of rolling stock for bigger trams. And rightly so - apart from being a little tight, the quality of these vehicles leaves a bit to be desired. Unfortunately, the new government has already annouced cuts of £600m from the department's budget. Thus, knowing how much the Tories dislike trams, it is a good question whether this project will survive.
